Building Envelopes: Techniques We Use to Master Their Design

Building envelopes play a large role in the energy-efficiency and long-term durability of a building. Faced with meeting strict energy codes, one of the best methods we use to master energy-efficient design is mastering the design and build of building envelopes. Here are just a few methods we use for successful, efficient building envelope design:

  • Include air barriers –– Efficient building envelopes have both interior and exterior air barriers. Each of these types of barriers complements and enhances the other, so they are both important to have in an efficient design.

  • Isolate the attic –– This can be accomplished in a number of ways. For example, to isolate this space, you can use a sealant to seal the interior drywall and exterior sheathing.
  • Ensure a tight seal– A tight seal should be maintained throughout the entire structure. Some of the critical areas that need to be sealed tightly include the HVAC ductwork, electrical boxes, window and rough door openings, and rim joist areas.
